FALL 2019 RUNWAY: STELLA JEAN

For her Fall 2019 collection, Stella Jean focused on her Haitian heritage and its rich history. The Haitian-Italian designer put a modern spin on her history lesson by presenting the leader of the Haitian fight for independence, Toussaint L’Overture, as a woman. She explores the intersection of identity and colonialism while encouraging the need for diversity in the design world. According to Jean, “I think it’s important to talk about my multiculturalism. I did an interview not long ago, and they said, ‘You know, it is incredible that you are the first black Italian fashion designer!’ And I say that is not a good thing! I want there to be many, many others—I should not be the exception.”
